In this episode of The M&E Drop-in podcast, I discuss digital transformation in the construction industry with special guests Rob and Matt from Staht Ltd – a UK company designing, manufacturing, and selling innovative digital pull-testing equipment with software.

We touch upon various aspects of how technology is shaping the built environment and its impact on construction processes.

The episode starts with introductions from the guests who explain their respective roles and backgrounds, and dives into how Rob and Matt ended up working together. Rob discusses his previous experience in engineering and the challenges faced in software development for fall protection equipment.

The pair then collaborated to develop solutions, marking Rob's first experience with enterprise systems aiding in efficiency and planning within the construction domain.

The guests then explained to me the concept behind Staht's digital product, the “Digital Pull Tester” which was launched following an extensive programme of design, development, and testing. It performs tensile load tests on fixings and eye bolts used in construction for safety and is the most compact and technically advanced on-site proof load testing machine currently on the market.

The product records data and test results digitally, enabling rapid reporting and sharing of results, and includes an App to record and share a personalised report for your colleagues and customers.

Our discussion then shifts to the significance of digital technology and compliance, with the Building Safety Act in place and the "Golden thread" of information becoming a key requirement for Tier 1 and M&E Contractors.

We then explore how AI (Artificial Intelligence) fits into the construction landscape. Matt highlights the speed at which AI is evolving and its transformative potential. While AI can lead to some job displacements, it also offers opportunities for innovation, adaptation, and enhanced efficiency in the industry.

In terms of advice for individuals with digital product ideas for the construction sector, they emphasize the importance of research, networking, creativity, and a willingness to learn from failures. They encourage innovation and highlight that failing and learning from mistakes is a crucial part of the development process.

Throughout the podcast, the overarching theme is the importance of embracing digital transformation in the construction industry, from complying with regulations to gaining operational efficiency.

The guests' experiences and insights provide a valuable overview of the current landscape and future potential of technology in the construction sector, and I learned a lot from having this conversation with them.

Many thanks to Matt and Rob – you were brilliant guests!
