We are pleased to welcome Fergus Moran to our growing design and engineering team. Here he discusses his role as a CAD Technician, his interests, and his advice for anyone wishing to start a career in design engineering.

What is your role at MIDFIX?

I work in the engineering design team at MIDFIX as a CAD technician. As well as being a trusted supplier, MIDFIX offers bespoke solutions to the building services industry which includes design and pre-fabrication. It's an exciting time to have joined this fast-growing team and I look forward to seeing what the future holds!

What interests you about design?

Coming from an engineering background, I've always been drawn to technical challenges. Design offers the opportunity to approach technical challenges creatively and see your ideas made into reality. MIDFIX is a great place to be in design because the fabrication workshop is on-site and it's easy to pop down and see your work in the flesh.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy playing sport, visiting new places and socialising. Most of my spare time, however, is filled with music. I play the drums in a couple of different bands and I play the guitar as well. It's been a frustrating year for live music for obvious reasons, but it looks like we'll be able to start playing shows in the not too distant future.

What do you most enjoy about working at MIDFIX?

During my induction, I've had the chance to meet almost everyone here at MIDFIX and I've been made to feel very welcome by every team I've worked with. I also get a sense that everyone here has strong pride in the work they do. It's a nice feeling coming into work knowing that everyone is motivated to work towards a shared goal.

Do you have any advice for people wanting a career in this field?

Don't be afraid to get stuck in and experiment. I've found that when it comes to CAD, the best way to learn is to try things out yourself. There are so many great free online learning resources out there now so if you're serious about getting into engineering design then my advice would be to take full advantage of that and start building your skills straight away.
