What is MX-R Access? 

Rooftops often host a cluster of crucial services like AC units, ductwork, pipework, and more.  

When you need to maintain or inspect these rooftop units or services and require safe and easy access to them - you need a rooftop access platform. 

However, what we often see on many construction sites is the casual use of wooden pallets as makeshift steps and bridges to navigate pipework and ducting for maintenance access. 

This practice is a big “no-no” in the world of safety and compliance, as specified in the BS ISO 14122 i.e., the standard requirements for the stability and load capacity of access platforms.

Why is there a need for MX-R Access? 

As mentioned above, there is a great need in the construction industry for safe maintenance access on construction sites rather than makeshift solutions, to avoid workplace accidents and injuries.  

This is why we ensured that MX-R Access is a system that keeps safety and compliance in mind and is designed in accordance with the health and safety standards set by the BS ISO 14122.

As per its guidelines, MX-R Access has been tested against a 1.5kN of force (152.96kg) load bearing capacity, and therefore, comes with reliable test data to evidence this. As you may already know, evidencing your structure’s load bearing capacity is an integral part of not just the BS ISO 14122, but also the 2022 Building Safety Act and the ‘Golden thread’ secondary legislation which mandates that all contractors must be able to demonstrate the performance of their installations with reliable test data.   

Naturally, stacked wooden pallets are not designed for footing with these criteria in mind. They lack the structural integrity to support the weight of individuals moving across them or performing maintenance tasks, and additionally lack any reliable test data to provide a clear indication of the same. 

Handrails and Guardrails  

The standard outlines requirements for guardrails and handrails, such as height and strength, to prevent workers falling from dangerous heights. Accordingly, MX-R Access is designed with a standard 42mm OD handrailing to fulfil the requirements of BS 14122.  

 Durability and Non-Slip Material  

Compliant access platforms and walkways should be constructed from durable and non-slip materials designed to withstand outdoor and industrial environments. This is followed by MX-R Access in many ways. Here are some design considerations that ensure this: 

• The rubber feet spread the load out evenly without penetrating the roof membrane. 
• All metalwork comes with a hot dip galvanised finish to withstand harsh environmental conditions. 
• The width is kept to a standard of 800mm. 
• It contains 38mm, non-slip GRP grating as standard. 
• A heavy-duty stringer is added for stability. 
• For platforms over 500mm tall, toe plates and kick plates are included.
